Basque research and development are fully focused on the COVID-19 health alert
Several collaborative research and technology centres that form part of the BRTA alliance are currently involved in a number of scientific and technological initiatives in an attempt to lessen the impact produced by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. More specifically, Tekniker is currently designing, developing and manufacturing a respirator for patients.
In order to make the Basque Country’s scientific and technological research available to society at large, the cooperative research centres and technology centres (CIC) that form part of the Basque Research and Technology Alliance – BRTA are currently collaborating with the industrial sector, the health care system and public authorities to lessen the health care crisis produced by COVID-19.
It is in this particular context that the Tekniker technology centre, a member of the Basque Research and Technology Alliance (BRTA), is currently involved in the design, development and production of a respirator for patients.
More specifically, the technology centre is focused on developing a solution that can automatically activate the so-called “ambu” resuscitators so they may operate as respirators. An ’ambu’ is a manual device that provides positive pressure ventilation for people with breathing difficulties.
The possibility of automating these devices will provide respirators which, although somewhat more artisanal in terms of design, will play a crucial role at this point in time.
Companies such as Wanbat, Cisco, Omron, Martinena, Igus, Ingeteam, Haku, Licuit and Eper are involved in the project.
