Passive Control of Regenerative Chatter in Turning Through Modulating Tool-Holder

Machine tool chatter is one of the main problems arising in machining processes. The so-called regenerative effect is believed to be responsible of the cutting force variation due to the wavy surfaces generated in previous revolutions.
A new approach is presented in order to avoid chatter while enhancing machining productivity by using a modulated tool-holder. The approach can be used as an alternative to the more explored spindle velocity variation approach whose applicability is often limited due to the high power/torque required to accelerate the drive when high rotational inertias are present. The implementation of the system is also more straightforward and simple than other options such as machine impedance modulation.
