Technology centres make major progress towards achieving a sustainable future on “World Futures Day”.
It is within the framework of the “World Futures Day”, held every December 2, that Fedit technology centres have played an outstanding role with regard to devising innovative solutions that will give rise to a more sustainable future. One of the developments in which Tekniker has been involved is project Rewind whose purpose is to revolutionise how wind turbine generator blades can be managed and reutilised at the end of their service life.
Every December 2, the ‘Worlds Future day’ encourages participants to reflect upon global challenges and opportunities to implement initiatives that will guarantee a sustainable future. It is in this context that Fedit Technology Centres are to play a key role in developing innovative solutions related to areas such as energy transition, circular economy and industrial sustainability.
In fact, one of the most outstanding endeavours is Rewind, a project led by AIMPLAS in which Tekniker is also involved and that addresses a critical problem: how to dismantle and reutilise wind turbine blades once they reach the end of their life cycle. Tekniker’s contribution towards the project is focused on developing software tools to facilitate blade cutting operations and minimise processing requirements in terms of recycling. The organisation is also applying several cutting technologies (laser, machining, ultrasounds) and developing an advanced LFD delamination process to produce fibres with improved mechanical properties.
One of the expected outcomes is related to the possibility of reutilising wind turbine blades to produce acoustic insulation and panels for industrial electric vehicles to further the circularity of these materials and help to build a more sustainable model in the wind power industry.
In addition to the above, technology centres are currently looking into other strategic areas such as decarbonising buildings, developing digital tools for the circular economy, producing renewable hydrogen and managing waste and natural resources sustainably.
The Spanish Federation of Technology Centres (Fedit) has stressed that it is fundamental to produce and transfer scientific-technological knowledge so that the present challenges can be transformed into future opportunities. Thanks to their work, technology centres can reassert their commitment with regard to building a world that is more resilient, innovative and sustainable.
