Today, an exhibition jointly carried out with Tekniker will open at the Laboratorium museum in Bergara to showcase the progress made to date in making a 3D digitisation of a whale’s skeleton.

Today, the Laboratorium museum in Bergara will unveil a new exhibition showing the progress made with a 3D scan of a whale’s skeleton. This project has been carried out with Tekniker, whose research work is now reaching out to the cultural and heritage sector to apply innovative technologies to the study, conservation and dissemination of the cultural heritage.

By digitising the skeleton of a whale, it will be possible to produce an accurate digital record to perform in-depth studies and ensure digital conservation for future generations. Moreover, a complete virtual reconstruction of the skeleton will be made to perform thorough analyses and visualisations. Lastly, and thanks to interactive digital technologies, it will be possible to disseminate this heritage by engaging the public in an educational and immersive experience.

To create this “digital twin" of the skeleton, Tekniker used a 3D photogrammetry technique, following metrological quality standards. Photogrammetry makes it possible to measure the geometry and colour of an object accurately with digital images taken from different angles. Tekniker researchers have been involved in this project to share their knowledge and expertise in using these technologies.

This initiative forms part of a special programme set up to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the museum that will also feature other activities such as lectures, workshops and interactive exhibitions. The whale exhibition, with its digitalised skeleton, is to become a permanent attraction at the museum to show visitors an innovative approach explaining how digital technologies can be used to conserve our heritage.

This collaborative action involving Tekniker and the Laboratorium museum illustrates how a technological innovation can significantly enhance the study, conservation and dissemination of our cultural heritage and also offer new possibilities in terms of conservation and accessibility in the digital era.
